People who give opportunities to local talent should be commended. Gail Davis of the Miss Tropical MK beauty pageant is one such person.
Opportunities do not come often, especially if you are a local fashion designer trying to get noticed. Gail created the opportunity, and four fashion designers grabbed the chance. They were joined by local Boutique APRICOT and to repeat the classic song by The Four Seasons, “Oh what a night”.
In the fashion industry things rarely go according to plan whether because a model cannot be found, clothing is ripped or lost, the DJ is running late or guests haven’t arrived on time, but th
e show must go on, and so it did on Sunday 25th July at the Windmill Hill
Golf Club in Bletchley. Gail who is also the pageant Director of Miss Tropical MK, a talent & cultural Pageant for young women is the brains behind F4! “Fashionably 4ward”. The show, according to Gail, “was an opportunity to showcase Talented Designers & Performers in our local community”.
It was also an opportunity to promote the Miss Tropical MK Pageant & Ball to be held on Sunday August 25, at the Novotel Hotel in Milton Keynes. 13 contestants from varied ethic and mixed heritages will compete on the night for the Inaugural Annual Title in talent, Cultural & Interview segments.
On the night designs were mostly modelled by the contestants in the Miss Tropical MK pageant, so the event fulfilled two purposes. It allowed local designers to show case their work, and the public to take a last look at the Ms Tropical finalists before the event on 25th August.
The first designer on the night was Naz from Luton showing off her label Vogue Allure. Tailored for both men and women, this monochrome collection was inspired by the days of the Tudors, contemporary and theatrical fashion. Get in touch with Gail through the Miss Tropical Website if you would like to find out more about Naz’s work.
The second designer was Brenda, she is head of Broghana Majoel. Brenda said she was inspired by past history, her life and African designs. The models looked fierce, edgy, and sexy and were reminiscent of a fashionable African warrior princess. The up and coming graduate of Central Saint Martins told us, “Anything that can be worn, I design.”
Lynda Christina attended one of the top fashion schools in the UK, London College of Fashion. Her label Rokoko is a mixture of summer fun couture with multicoloured tops pieced with sequin shorts. She prefers to work with jersey as it works best for black figures. Lynda was also on trend with a green sequined top with jeans and nude slingbacks.
Ten out of thirteen contestants from Miss Tropical MK 2010 modelled for Apricot’s Spring Summer 2010 collection. The collection is based on floral prints, maxi dresses, pinks and light greys. They kindly agreed to give 10% discount when you visit the shop with a Miss Tropical MK 2010 flyer.
The Miss Tropical MK pageant thanked sponsors Spa Café, Crystal Image and Grandma’s Caribbean Kitchen as well as The MK Mix for their support; the DJ, the caterers, our entertainment YDD and Noamie Keysha, the designers and models and last but not least the staff at The Windmill Golf Club. Well done and good luck to all the girls in Miss Tropical MK pageant being held at the Novotel Hotel, Sunday 22nd August. For more information and tickets visit www.misstropicalmk.co.uk
